CLAUDE BOLLING

Claude Bolling: Full Speed

Because I couldn't resist after Sheridan's Thursday's post. Here we have Claude in a swingin' mood. This goes out to one psychedelic party Dupre should host. Right?! Anyone interested in attending?

Claude Bolling: Sentimentale from Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano

That's Jean-Pierre Rampal on flute, Marcel Sabiani on drums, and (who else?) Max Hediguer on bass. The liner notes are a model of restrained professional approval:

One floor in the CBS building (on 6th Avenue in New York City) houses Columbia Records' A&R divisions - pop, jazz and classical. A feeling of camaraderie generally exists among the workers but the sound of a tape or disc reference denoting a new release can, and often does, lead to patient shrugs or tempered verbal exchanges between people of widely differing musical persuasions. A happy exception to this attitude of reluctant laissez-faire occurred recently when pianist Claude Bolling's Suite for Flute and Jazz piano was played in a producer's office. The universal appeal of this record became immediately apparent when other producers and secretaries from all divisions converged spontaneously in an expression of enthusiastic interest.

So kudos to Bobby Finn, the author of the most corporate, lifeless liner notes I've ever read.

I feel like I've seen this music somewhere, though. You know?

Dave Brubeck: Theme from "Mr Broadway" and Winter Ballad

Two from Jazz Impressions of New York. The first was the theme song to an evidently short lived TV series called "Mr Broadway." Below you can see the opening credits, and you won't want to miss the sponsorship ad.

A croquet set?

And the second, "Winter Ballad," has just the right touch of menthol.

The players:
Dave Brubeck, piano
Paul Desmond, alto sax
Gene Wright, bass
Joe Morello, drums

Marginal Sound Quality Upgrade!

Brett Smiley - Run For The Sun

Hey gang, I thought the mp3 I posted of this as part of this collection was maybe a little too bright, so here's a new one that possibly sounds slightly better! More importantly, can anyone tell me about the supposed cover version of this by Italian singer Droopi (or is that Drupi)? This is mentioned in the liner notes for Breathlessly Brett, but I can't find anything about it online. Big thanks again to Piper K for the tip on this jammer! Get the whole album here.

COUNTDOWN TO ECSTASY

The new Viva show drops today at 2 PM: that's just 26 minutes away if you're in the EST. Today's show features 9 new-to-me jams, 7 gemms from the archives, and 2 commercials (!), including the one above. Those of a certain age who grew up in the Tri-State Area might remember it. Dig the chords behind the announcements.

Listen to the Viva show live here, or after-the-fact here. Comments & emails always appreciated!
