So he ended up going with the G# minor chord (the one D.C. calls Hawaiian) in the finished song, although he puts it over an E bass, so it's actually an E maj 7.
(N.B. He's playing the song in D here, but the recorded version is in G, so the chord on the bridge in the recorded version is an A maj 7.)
