Dusty Springfield - Arrested By You

Eternal gratitude to new Viva Radio contributor Wombleton Records for introducing me to this enchanting Rupert Hine cover. This track has inspired me to once again turn to you, dear readers, and ask for suggestions for an all-1990 playlist. This is admittedly a pretty obviously bad idea. (What am I going for here, anyway? Vaguely dated adult contemporary? And if so, why?)

In any case, let me know if you have any tips for hot tracks from the MCMXC, and enjoy the Dusty in the meanwhile.

There was never any chance that there wouldn't be a key change in this.

  1. Enjoyed the Dusty track a lot. Thanks!

As for 1990 tracks: thinking over the year now, it's a real hodge-podge of popiness and abrasivness for me. Here's the pick of about all I still listen to from that year:

    Pet Shop Boys: Being Boring
    My Bloody Valentine: *Soon*, *Glider*
Sinead O'Connor: The Last Day of Our Acquaintance, Three Babies
Cocteau Twins: Cherry-Coloured Funk, Iceblink Luck
Sundays: Here's where the story ends, I kicked a Boy
    Prefab Sprout: Wild Horses
Ride: In a different place, Dreams burn down, Vapour trail, Nowhere, *Today*
The Chills:‪ ‬Heavenly Pop Hit, ‪*Effloresce and Deliquesce*‬, Submarine Bells
    John Zorn: Bonehead, Hammerhead, Hellraiser

Not sure how many if any of these hit the art decade sweet spot, but they're all I have!

  2. Hey, thanks Plague! I know, it's a weird year. No clear-cut cultural vibe, really. That's kind of why I'm interested in it - it's a blank. Keep the suggestions coming if you got 'em. Thanks again for the comment.

  5. @emmett. You're welcome. BTW, Ride's Today, which I starred for you, is a 1991 release damn it (it's included on recent re-releases of Ride's classic 1990 album, fooling me).

  6. Hey Emmett, glad you're back! I was just thinking of the 90s and wondering if one were to randomly say the decade opened with the album 'BossaNova' by the Pixies ('90)what record would close it going off of that sound tangent?

"The Happening" would be a good pick from said album. A song with references to Area 51 and UFO's. The dawn of the 'information age'.

  7. One or two good albums from that year.
    'Violator'
Jane's Addiction 'Ritual...' (anything off side 2)
    KLF 'Chill Out'
Galaxie 500 'This Is Our Music...'
    Codeine 'Frigid Stars'
    Eno/Cale 'Wrong Way Up'
    PE '...Black Planet'
    Jellyfish 'Bellybutton'

@plague. Nowhere is out from '91 but the Smile CD with 1st 2 EPs is okay. Drive Blind, Chelsea Girl etc.

    The Loop Orchestra - Sunspense
The Orb - Little Fluffy clouds (different mixes)
The Blow Monkeys - La Passionara - 12''

  15. Sparse highlights: Fugazi's Repeater, the first Teenage FC album, Mark Lanegan's Winding Sheet, Uncle Tupelo's debut, and the La's. Good enough for me... Cheers!

  16. Already some great suggestions...
    Possible additions:

Yo La Tengo - The Summmer (Fakebook)

Paul Simon - Born at the Right Time/The Obvious Child (Rhythm of the Saints)

    Bel Biv Devoe - Poison

Tough year for pop, but hip hop was thriving (Lord Finesse, EPMD, PE, Digital Underground, 3rd Bass...).

    Looking forward to your concoction!

  17. One that definately comes to mind is "Ride with me" by the Lemonheads, sort of a draggy epic, the mighty A.R. Kane put out a remix EP with Robin Guthrie with a lovely miles apart remix, pure artdecade that one.

  18. I wanted to bring up something by brian ferry or roxy music but couldn't find anything decent.

Now that you 've added 'Mother of Pearl' to the PL, I think I have to revoke my verdict 'bout 1990.

    It was a great year!
