The Police: When The World Is Running Down You Make The Best Of What's Still Around [1980]

from Zenyatta Mondatta

Historical note: Is this the first use of the word "VCR" in a rock song?

  1. as for the mention of 'vcr' in a tune--i would venture to say it is the first time it was used. great song, a shame that Sting went soft.

  3. Buggles' 1979 hit "Video killed the radio star"
went like this in the bridge:
In my mind and in my car
We can't rewind we've gone to far
Pictures came and broke your heart
    Put the blame on VCR.

Sorry Sting, no cigar (Not that he needs it).

I'm quite sure there are even earlier uses of the V-word if you go to more obscure songs.

  4. Re: what city: I don't know. To find that pic I googled "life in motion." Re: The Buggles. Nice call, anonymous! The group mind wins again!

  5. Actually, you're both right. The Buggles lyric is: "Pictures came and broke your heart, put the blame on VTR." (Video Tape Recorder)

Sting's lyric is: "Turn on my V.C.R.
Same one I've had for years." (Video Cassette Recorder)

So Sting still kinda gets a cigar.
