FROM THE ARCHIVES

Francis Lai - Melissa

This was supposed to be a vinyl rip the first time {10/26/07}, but it wasn't then, and now it is. Props to the bass player. Recorded at Studio Davout.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a big box set of all the David Hamilton soundtracks, including this one?

The triumphant return of Paolo C. to these pages. Great chords on the chorus.

Haircut One Hundred - Evil Smokestacking Baby

I was checking out an eBay auction for Cedar Walton's Low Rider, only to learn that the Idjuts had already released it, with this evocative Haircut 100 jam on the flip. I give you Evil Smokestacking Baby, unedited and unmixed.

TWO FOR THURSDAY: Alex North Edition

The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody
Gabor Szabo - Love Theme from Spartacus

A brace of themes today from film composer Alex North, born Isadore Soifer in Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1910.

See here for the history of Unchained Melody. I would like to point out that the otherworldly strings on the bridge ("Lonely rivers flow...") make this arguably the greatest bridge in the history of recorded music. String arrangement by Jack Nitzche. Lyrics by Hy Zaret, born Hyman Harry Zaritsky in New York City, in 1907.

Gabor's account of the love theme from Spartacus is from the archives (originally aired 8/6/07), and it's arguably my favorite of all the songs I've ever posted here. Arranged and conducted by Nick DeCaro.

No idea what Paolo's on about here, but I'm digging his rap nonetheless.

Linda Perhacs - If You Were My Man (demo)

Pour yourself a Riuniti on ice and get nice to this. Available on the CD reissue of Parallelograms. See also Linda Perhacs dot com.

"Even as a tiny child, I have seen musical tones and colours as twins (and they are twins vibrationally in physics)." --Linda Perhacs

Personally, I'm getting a sort of vitreous green from the double-tracked vocals on this chorus.

Delroy Wilson - Have Some Mercy
Observers - Different Fashion

When we posted that George Faith song last March, I knew it was a William Bell cover, but I did not ken that it was actually more of a cover of this Delroy Wilson jam (if this is even the original?). Such the stellar vocal performance from Delroy.
