Bobby Womack: I Can Understand It and Ruby Dean [1972]
from the album Understanding
I tracked down this album because I wanted to hear the OG of I Can Understand It, which was covered by New Birth and featured in these pages way back in November '06. (Here's the New Birth version again for those who missed it the first time.) Well, this album is a monster! The sound is so thick and muddy (in a good way), it makes Al Green sound like Spandau Ballet. (Just kidding -- but the sound is thick...)
The players:
Bobby Womack, Pam Grier, Patrice Holloway, Janice Singleton (vocals)
Tippy Armstrong, Redgie Young, Jimmy Johnson (guitar)
Harvey Thompson (tenor saxophone)
Ronnie Eads (baritone saxophone)
Harrison Calloway, Jr. (trumpet)
Dale Quillen (trombone)
Barry Beckett (acoustic & electric pianos, harpsichord, clavichord, Moog synthesizer)
Bobby Wood (acoustic & electric pianos)
Bobby Emmons (organ)
David Hood, Mike Leech (bass)
Roger Hawkins, Hayward Bishop (drums, percussion)
Producers: Bobby Womack, Joe Hicks

LOVE what you guys do.
Namechecked your 'long seventies' concept today as I posted re. Bobby Womack's 'The Poet', not realising at the time that you'd already posted these tracks from 'Understanding'. What weird web synchronicities keep on comin' at me...
Keep up the splendid work.
Hey Davy, thanks for the comment and the name check. That's very weird about the Womack! Looking forward to hearing the songs you posted -- I've never heard any of 'em...
Cheers, Emmett
Very cool post on "I Can Understand it." Now to really get down, check out the version by British group Kokomo, mid-seventies on Columbia. You can post it along side of Roger Daltrey's hit of "Get Your Love," on which they sing backgrounds.
Now about those Bowie/SVR tracks, please?
