Freddie Scott: Are You Lonely For Me [1966]

written by Bert Berns

This was a #1 R&B hit for 4 weeks in early '67 and climbed as high as #39 on the pop charts. Covered by many, including Otis & Carla, Al Green, and Jerry Garcia. Ideally you would hear this on the radio while driving down the highway late at night...

Superb song. Superb Performance. Superb Production.

Allegedly, it took 100 takes to get the vocal down to both Scott and Berns' satisfaction, but they manage to make the end result sound totally effortless and off the cuff.

any chance of putting up "when the hunter gets captured by the game?"

That's not a bad idea at all, Barn. You know, I'm also sitting on the original I'll Take A Melody. Maybe I'll do a "Roots of Garcia" compilation CD and vine it... in another lifetime, of course

BTW, I got the Ned Dohenys in the mail. They're good, but probably not worth $60. You might see another song or 2 from Ned on here eventually...

Interesting tidbit about the 100 takes, ib. Now that you mention it, Freddie's vocal does have a "take 100" sort of flavour to it...

This is one of the most "incendiary" pop records of all time. It just exploded out of the radio back in the day. Buster P. also did it on his "HotHotHot" CD. Ronnie Wood did a good version of the followup ("Am I Groovin' You?"). Speaking of the amazing Bert Berns, there is a collector's item Bang 45 of Van Morrison's "Ro RO Rosey," that features a female chorus (not on album) all in awesome mono.
