Hoagy Carmichael: Stardust

I don't know what year this recording is from as the record I have it on ("Hoagy Carmichael sings Hoagy Carmichael", MCA Records, MCL 1620) offers no info. Hoagy must've recorded this dozens of times in his life so it's difficult to suss which version this is. From the liner notes: "(Stardust) first saw the light of day in 1927 as an up-tempo piano solo... one of the three all-time best sellers in sheet music form... Its real success came in 1931 when Mitchell Parish slowed the tune down and added lyrics."

I like the ghostly image of the whistling you can hear before the whistling starts. What's the official term for that audio anomaly?

It's probably tape print-through.

Yeah, this is my favorite version of Stardust - took me a few frustrating tries to find it digitally back in the day. No idea on the year either, though. :-(
