Ashkenazy's take on the Etudes were the first I'd heard, but these days, gimme Cortot's versions. Lots of wrong notes (to me, that's part of the strange appeal) but g'DAM that guy was musical:

Thx for the tip, Walk. Ashkenazy's version was almost the selection for this post but in the end I went with Maurizio. I listened to about 5 versions... curious to hear Cortot's. Recently picked up a "modernized" version of the Ocean Wave etude as performed by G.P. Reverberi. Good times, good times.
