William DeVaughn: Be Thankful For What You Got (1980 version - DJ Day edit)

Big B raged the original version of this back in January '07. Now DJ Day has come through with this all-good edit of the 1980 remake, highlighting the left-right interplay of rhythm guitars. At this juncture I'd like to wish a happy ongoing birthday to longtime co-conspirator ib, who astutely and presciently noted a connection between this and the Steel An' Skin dub from last Thursday. And thanks last but not least to the sonic warriors at Two For Tennis Radio, for turning me on to both tracks.

Awesome! There was thunder and forked lightning accompanying this as it played it my browser... I kid you not! Late afternoon tendrils smoking over the railway tracks leading into Glasgow Central and the streets awash with rain.

Beautiful! My brain is still poached and my skull fractured like Humpty Dumpty's after his fall, and the atmospherics alongside this gorgeous song are suitably apocalyptic. Love the "gangster" pics, too... Big B has to step up to the plate with a comment on this one, surely. Have you heard Arthur Lee's version of this ?

Hey ib, no, I've not heard Arthur's version of this. Is it good? Thanks for painting a picture of contemporary Glasgow for us. NYC today is hushed, grey, damp, and chilly, so I'm California dreamin'

Glasgow is loud! Or rather, the sky is... not so much judgmental as as a casual reminder that nature is still in charge. Arthur's version - from a 1974 "love" album, "Reel to Reel" on RSO (Robert Stigwood's label) - is actually very cool, but unable to surpass the original. It definitely warrants a listen. His hair had receded by this point enough to justify him shaving it in like Isaac Hayes, but he looks surprisingly "hip" on the inner sleeve.

Ready to jump the changing bus, at least. But how can you eclipse the seminal sounds of "Forever Changes" ?

My kids have just informed me that an adjacent tree has been set alight in the unexpected storm - fire engines a-go-go - so beat that for an exclamation mark!

I'm with you on the California Dreamin' imagery, but only if time travel is somehow involved...

Ib, happy belated! I would love to hear Arthur Lee's version. Ib, isn't time for another round of musings?
