I am loving this playlist so far; all the more surprising that it threads so seamlessly in chronological order.

I got as far as "No More White Horses" and felt compelled to comment. Great stuff. Just great.

Well worth the wait, absolutely spot on as always, loving that Fantastic Man real little treat.

Thanks man.

Hey, thanks for the comments, people! So glad you're enjoying the tuneage. I Spy: it's great to hear that the overwhelming surface noice on Fantastic Man didn't render it unlistenable!

Those Bob Summers songs are awesome

I Spy said...

Emmet, the surface noise purely adds to it's dynamic charm.

Thanks again.

the man iB who was compelled to write after hearing the T2 tune is bang on. any tune with that amount of guitar histrionics at the start is a keeper in my books. can't wait to hear the rest.

well done emmet. this friday night is shaping up just fine

just when I thought you won't make it anymore..... listening 2 your fabulous October PL that Friday night has been worth waiting for it a while and it is fully meeting my Charles Dickensian like expectations.

not each track is my cup of beer, but it 's nevertheless my most flabbergasting Downl. of the year.

the triumphant return of the TTTTTTTs fuzz guitar and spaced out moog-solo!!!! like that a lot, emmett.

never heard of T 2 b4. so I learned something from the net again.

and: "I need more" is one of the most uplifting dancefloor killers I ve ever had the pleasure 2 listen 2. it 's a beast, a monster that builds up slowly but constantly til the end and it is cooking up hotter and hotter and hotter - ah, I wish I ever have the opportunity 2 dance 2 it in a nice small discotheque or on a summer beach party in Barcelone or on a meditenarian (spelled right???) island!!!

btw: I had a deja-vu while listening 2 it; is there a garage house rmx? have the feeling I heard it b4 in the mid 9ties, n'est ce pas?

and i totally agree with your turn on the Bob Summers R.: that's definetly an "Abbey Road '68 with a certain George H. on lead guitar" sound.

also liked the surf track and paolo and and and...

have a nice weekend!

This is really brilliant, Emmett. Thanks so much for your efforts. Most of the stuff on this list is completely new to me. Ace.

W.A. MOZART – LE NOZZE DI FIGARO (OVERTURE) – RADIO-SYMPHONIE-ORCHESTER BERLIN, CONDUCTED BY FERENC FRICSAY
Recorded at Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin, September 1960. From the liner notes: “Ferenc Fricsay was already mortally ill when he conducted the present performance… It was to be one of the last Mozart recordings of his life; he died in Basle on 20 February 1963 at the age of 48.”

SONS OF THE PIONEERS – WIND
Written by Bob Nolan. Recorded at RCA Victor’s Music Center of the World, Hollywood, California, June 1959. Very classy ending. Special thanks to John Mark Lapham of The Earlies (www.theearlies.com) for the tip.

DEL KENT – HOLIDAY ON SATURN
I don’t know what year this was recorded; presumably early ‘60s. This was a 45 on the Dot label. I passed on an eBay auction for the record but a German surf enthusiast was kind enough to send me this mp3. Thanks, Klas.

ERNEST RANGLIN – LIQUIDATION
A cover of the classic “Liquidator” by Harry J and the All-Stars. Ernest’s behind-the-beat phrasing brings a smile to my face.

THE BOB SUMMERS REVIVAL – GEORGIA ON MY MIND and LAZY BONES
These jams are from a very weird record on the MGM label, produced by Mike Curb (check out “Sweet Gingerbread Man”, formerly posted on Art Decade). My understanding is that Bob Summers is the arranger. Unfortunately there is no information given about who the vocalist(s) or musicians are. Explicitly Beatlesque, White Album-era arrangements. The guitarist even pays homage to G. Harrison’s phrasing! Huge thanks to pop45.blogspot.com for the turn-on. Both compositions by Hoagy Carmichael (see his recording of Stardust, formerly posted on A.D.; also see The Stark Reality, formerly posted on A.D.).

T2 – NO MORE WHITE HORSES
Via mushrumps.com via bumrocks.com. T2 were Keith Cross on guitar, singing drummer Peter Dunton, and Bernard Jinks on bass. Huge props to the mushrumps guy for A) having such a beautiful copy of this record, and B) making this beautiful vinyl rip. After dozens of listens, I still get goosebumps when the riff comes back in at 7:10.

ERIC DONALDSON – BLUE BOOTS and BLUE BOOT
“Blue Boots” is the stereo mix, ripped from CD, and “Blue Boot” (sic) is the mono mix, ripped from Trojan Club Reggae Volume 4. Double-tracked vocals yielding an aqueous blue synaesthetic experience. This song single-handedly saved my life in mid-September.

ROLLING STONES – JUST WANNA SEE HIS FACE
A perennial favorite. I’ve been wanting to do an edit/extended/dub remix of this for about two years. Maybe one day I’ll get around to it. Keith Richards on electric piano!

HONEYBUS – BE THOU BY MY SIDE
Written by Ray Cane. I am stunned by how good this is. Simply stunned. Are the lyrics adapted from some 16th century sonnet? If so, I have yet to figure out which sonnet. Great harmonies on the chorus.

CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD – LIFE AND DEATH IN G & A
Check the A.D. archives for the Abaco Dream original. Thanks to lovefingers.org for the tip on this version. This mp3 is ripped from the 2009 CD reissue on Edsel (www.demonmusicgroup.co.uk). Intro reminiscent of “How Many More Times”, perhaps. For further evidence of a Zeppelin influence, check the bass drum at 4:51.

BILLY NICHOLLS – GIVE IT UP
Thanks to Mother Chimney for this nice slice of rare Billy. From the 1976 Meher Baba tribute album, “With Love”.

PAT THOMAS & MARIJATA – I NEED MORE
From the archives; original airdate February 1, 2008. I recently got my hands on this LP, so this mp3 represents a slight sound quality upgrade over the previous one. Featuring Kofi “Electrik” Addison on drums.

WILLIAM ONYEABOR – FANTASTIC MAN
From William’s 1979 Tomorrow LP. As you can hear, my copy is in hellacious condition. Uchetta at Comb & Razor (combandrazor.blogspot.com) tells me he’s in Nigeria right now with Mr. Onyeabor working on reissuing some of Mr. O’s music. Fingers crossed! This marks the triumphant return of W. Onyeabor to these pages - see Mike's post from 1/1/07.

PAOLO CONTE – PARIGI
Another classic from the master. I did not realize that Paolo could play the piano so beautifully. Lots more great Paolo mp3s available for purchase here: http://us.7digital.com/artists/paolo-conte/

PERFORMANCE – PILOTES
From 1982, on the Celluloid label. Nice melody, interesting chord changes. Reminds me a little of “Young Folks”.

PYRAMID PLUS – COMIN’ AT YA
I can’t afford this record.

EYE TO EYE – THE DEEP
From 1985, a cover of the Donna Summer classic, on the Rotterdam-based Hotsound label. Music (and lyrics?) by John Barry. “The days grow longer, and stronger…”

COCTEAU TWINS – CHERRY-COLOURED FUNK
I heard this record for the first time like three weeks ago.

SAINT ETIENNE – EVERYTHING FLOWS
Thanks to Cracklin’ Chimney for the tip. Available on the recently released So Tough deluxe edition, on Heavenly Recordings. See the A.D. archives for IB’s take on the Teenage Fanclub original, and of course, siblingshot.blogspot.com for more music and poesy from IB.

Thanks for listening, folks! Comments and/or emails are always hugely appreciated. We’ve been doing this for three years now. I hope you’re still enjoying the music as much as I am. I’m going to focus my musical energies this month on getting some DJ gigs, but hopefully I’ll still have time to round up some more jams to post in November. If not November, December at the latest! And don’t forget about the weekly shows on www.viva-radio.com!

Your friend,
Emmett

Hey guys, thanks for the comments! As you can see, I've moved the official textual analysis to the comments thread.

Joe: Thx for the comment - glad you enjoyed the B. Summers! Such a surprising record.

Anto: Great to hear from you. T2 is posted in tribute to the Masters: mushrumps.com and bumrocks.com. I agree; this song rules.

Ano 2: Thanks so much for your kind words! It took me quite a while to figure out what TTTTTTT meant... :) If there is a house version of I Need More, by all means send it my way!

Mike: thanks, dude. Hope all is well, and hope you can post again on A.D. soon...

emmet,

i took a dive into mushrumps only to find it died in 08. but the last tune they posted, K Rankins Peaceful is a huge one in our house - we spent a day on a mountain top in kerry with it on endless rotation. what a site. and bumrocks was the site that got me into The Stones tune Heaven a few yrs ago.
Your a gem man. Keep it rolling.

BTW, CNM's comment is really mine. Though she appreciates the blog too.

W.A.Mozart - Le Nozze Di Figaro (overture) brings a smile to my face as the opening sequence always reminds me of Trading Places.

emmett said...

Anto: thanks again for your encouragement! Rankin' on the Mountain... gotta love it.

Big B/CMN: thanks, guy(s). Big B, hope all is well, and hope to see you posting again soon... it doesn't have to all grind to a halt while I'm doing the monthly thing, right?

I Spy: Ha ha, was that in Trading Places? I had no idea. Classic film, classic overture. Thanks for the comment.
