Beck - Deadweight (edit)
I'm working on an all-1997 playlist for Viva Radio. This is one of the signature jams I remember from that gleaming year. Please write in with further suggestions for the playlist. Any organized sound created and/or distributed in 1997 qualifies. Deadline is this Friday 10/15!
P.S. Enjoy the authentic digi-rot at 0:43.

Aah, great year. Being 18 didn't hurt though!
Blur - Beetlebum
Primal Scream - If They Move, Kill 'Em (or 12" disco mix)

Jungle Brothers - Black Man on Track
Wu-Tang - Dog Shit
Gravediggaz - The Night the Earth Cried

Hey Pezzle and Neil, thanks a million for the suggestions. I will be researching these.

Through The Dark - The Sundays
Try - Michael Penn
Retrospect For Life - Common
Le soleil est près de moi - Air
Heaps of Sheep - Robert Wyatt
Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb - World Party

Wow, tons of great pixs in the comments. My ears bend towards the selections above for Yo La Tengo, Richard Davies (nice one), Jonathan Fire Eater (pre-Walkman), Nick Cave (beautiful song!), Chemical Brothers (must), Spiritualized, Air, and because I was living in Memphis during that time it would go without saying to include The Grifters, perhaps the track 'Happy'. Will be tough to narrow down your mix.
This is a good list for inspiration when it comes to 1997:

Some personal favourites:
Broadcast - The Booklovers
Radiohead - Pearly
Asian Dub Foundation - Modern Apprentice
Bjork - Bachelorette
Swell - Sunshine Everyday
Daft Punk - Da Funk (who doesn't remember the video with the dog, one of the most played of the year...)
The Verve - Lucky Man
Belle and Sebastian - The State That I Am In / Lazy Line Painter Jane
Elliott Smith - Angeles
Stereolab - Miss Modular
Spiritualized - Come Together
1997, memories, come back 2 me! Ah yes, aural pics begin 2 visualize. Seems that I was heavily in a retro mood, re-discovering Krautrock, And Hank Williams (the elder of course!)....and the great Souljazz-Compilation Double 12'' 'NuYorica'.
uh, the memories are geting stronger - a year with a lot of cool minimal tekkno, it seems. And Air and Blur (Song 2 and the beatlesque beetlebum) and the fantastic Revival of Prefab Sprout were around. Andromeda Heights, my favourite album of that year.
After re-checking my memories in the last 20 minutes or so in my little Hotelroom in Berlin-Mitte I have found these gems I would like to suggest in all modesty:
Electric Guitars/Prisoner of the Past/The Mystery of Love - Prefab Sprout
Superdiscount-Soldissimo (Air RMX)
Jeanne - Air/F. Hardy (B-side of Sexy Boy - Promo Single was already out in late 1997!)
From Disco to Disco - Whirlpool Prod. (rel. already in '96 but No. 1 in Italy in 1997)
Blues in Bob minor - R. Wyatt
M 7 - Maurizio
No Doubt – Don't Speak (the beginning of my secret luv to
Gwen Renee Stefani)
All the fantastic 12'' by Studio 1/Wolfgang Voigt.
Edwyn Collins - Magic Piper of Love (Collins goes 4 Tops!)
The Album - Porter Ricks
Check it out!
Ano 2
I have forgotten one of the best tracks of the year:
'Suavito' by Senor Coconut - supergroovy!
anonymus numero dos
Here's a great piece in this week's New Yorker issue that touches upon the opinion of who was the finest band in the 90s (Pavement or Nirvana?)
Heh...I was working at an HMV at the time...lots of great stuff out that year! Let me take a quick peek at my collection:
Jonatha Brooke, "Crumbs" (sure, alt-folk, but this song is great)
Big Wreck, "The Oaf" (AWESOME guitar work here)
The Dambuilders, "Burn this Bridge"
Dubstar, "Stars"
Love Spit Love, "Fall on Tears"
Mansun, "Wide Open Space"
Mogwai, "Mogwai Fear Satan"
Pulusha, "Isolation Pt 1"
Nine Inch Nails, "Perfect Drug"
Summercamp, "Should I Walk Away" (or alternately, "Drawer")
Supergrass, "Late in the Day" (one of my Top 10 favorite videos ever)
Travis, "All I Want to Do is Rock"
Hope that helps! :)
Wow, great suggestions everybody! I'm going to have to block out about 8 hours to listen to all of these, and I'm super-excited to do so! Keep the suggestions coming!
Here are some from 1997 that I probably would have been listening to...
Bjork - Joga
Blues Traveler - Most Precarious
Cibo Matto - Sugar Water (Mike D., Russel Simins, Mario Caldato Jr. Remix)
Moby - Go
Phish - Wolfman's (Off Slip Stich and Pass)
Roni Size - Brown Pager Bag
Paul Simon - Adios Hermanos
Also, I believe that was the Buena Vista Social Club period... I think I had all of those related CDs at some point.
Morcheeba - Shoulder Holster.
The album it's from, Big Calm, came out in early 1998, but the single was '97. Apart from that Yo La Tengo album, this was as cool as it got.
