In the 90's, this beat was everywhere.

I hear this and I think Tone Loc.

Interesting connection. As it happens, I'm posting a series of Tone Loc B-sides and outtakes all next week...

This beat got a good head-start in the '80s with Paid in Full and Pump Up The Volume, but, yeah, Back to Life, Set Adrift on Memory Bliss, Come Undone...it was truly freakin' everywhere in the '90s...and, to be fair, always sounded pretty great (it took truly massive overuse to kill it).

Hey Plague, thanks for the comment. Solid analysis. I think of this beat as generally in a different area from 4-on-the-floor, and it came in huge in the late 80s / early 90s. All the Madchester stuff. Jesus Jones: "Right Here, Right Now." Even Smells Like Teen Spirit. Think about it. You could put this beat behind Smells Like Teen Spirit... and that's not a given.

Unrest's 'Isobel' - great track! How about Peter Murphy's
Roll Call

EMF's Unbelievable was another big hit with this sample/beat.

Anyhow, in 2009, BBC Radio4 did a *fantastic* hour-show on sampling and crate-digging called 'Beat Mining with the Vinyl Hoover', which covered the Soul Searchers break in detail. The BBC hasn't kept the show available, but it appears to still be downloadable
here. Highly highly recommended.
