Genesis: The Musical Box [1973]

taken from Genesis Live

Been listening to this one again for the first time in about 20 years. You can pretty much see the dwarves dancing around the plinth at the 4:08 mark, but/and the last three minutes will never stop ruling. I'm going with the live version so you can hear the amps buzz.

Ah. What would life have been without Genesis?

"Ah. What would life have been without Genesis?"

All misery and no Eden.

I am happy to see that we have a fundamentalist following now.

Finally.

I think this is officially my favorite song of all time. You're right, the ending is incredible, gives me chills every time. Good call on the Live version. There are certain aspects of the studio version I prefer, but overall this one is probably superior.

Hey ss, thanks for the comment, and thanks for the endorsement of the live version. I spent a dark night of the soul trying to decide which version to post. I ended up liking PG's singing more on the live version so that was the deciding factor. I agree, parts of the studio version are better (like the very beginning, e.g.)

Personally I think "Supper's Ready" was the highpoint of the original Genesis (I never liked much that they did after Gabriel left). Saw them do it live at Reading Festival in the early 70s - outstanding.

I haven't heard Supper's in a long, long time, PB. When I was a youth it always kind of scared me, for some reason. I'd like to hear that one again. "Walking across the sitting room, I turn the television off..." Cool story about the Reading Festival. Sounds like fun.

Mmmm... I had this record but sold it, since I at the time preferred the studio version. Thanks for the post.

Sorry for the delayed response. I agree, PG's vox are better in the live version, they just soar. The one moment where I do think the studio reigns supreme is the moment when the keyboard solo cuts into the guitar solo (at least I think that's what's happening - at 6:05 into the studio version) - it's very subtle, but it's a little tighter there than in the live version.
