Neil Young:
Mr. Soul (dance remix) [1982]
Sample And Hold (dance remix) [1982]

As so often happens, the moment we brought up Neil Young on Thursday, people started clamoring to hear something from Trans. So for the hardcore Trans-fans among us (I'm thinking in particular of Sheridan DuPre II, Jude, and JAZ chimney), here are the dance remixes from the Sample And Hold 12". Two great floor-fillers from the post-stagflation Neil. Get up!

Why don't you own Trans yet?

Yes! Excellent post. What is that graphic? I love it. I am going to replicate it on my bedroom wall.

Another excellent post, A.D. Had no idea these existed. This blog continues to rule the school.

Mike, it's a "sample and hold" diagram. The top signal is modified by the second, and you get the result at the bottom. Can't recall offhand if there's actually any "sample and hold" going on in Neil's song, but some good sonic examples would be the beginning of "Karn Evil 9", the end of "The Beautiful Ones" etc.

Walkathon -- thanks! And thanks for the info re: sample and hold. I gathered that it had something to do with synthesis, but I had no idea what. I had a couple synths growing up but I never figured out too much about how they work. "ADSR". That's about all I remember! :)

i remember listening to Trans after school one week with my pre-teen buddy Greg and trying to figure out what was going on in Neil's mind... Then we moved onto Devo and the rest is history...

I bought the original LP of Trans (as well as the remastered CD) -- but I've been unable to listen to the more grungy guitar of the original "Sample and Hold" since my turntable died about a decade ago.

Is there NO WAY to hear the original any more? I felt a bit cheated when I bought the CD, and heard Nil Lofgren's (I think) awesome grungy guitar replaced with a cheap dance beat.

Not exactly my fave Neil. I have the live official VHS of that tour somewhere. Of course, Neil has always done 'weird stuff,' but this was out of character.
