Rod Stewart: Handbags and Gladrags [1969]

written by one-time Manfred Mann lead singer Mike d'Abo, who also plays piano on the track

from the LP An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down

Released as a single in 1969, "Handbags" was re-released in January of '72 and went to #42 in the U.S. and #25 in Canada.

The song was originally recorded by Chris Farlowe, whose version made it to #33 on the UK charts in November of '67.

Also, what is a "gladrag"?

Hello.

Gladrags are your best clothes, such as those you'd wear when going out of an evening.

Many thanks, Paolo. Very interesting.

By the way, I love the locution "of an evening". You and Charles Dickens are the only two people I have ever heard say that!

Your 'glad rags' are your best duds and I always understood it to be an American phrase in the first place. Jack London certainly used it and he was as English as anyone else from San Francisco!

Doesn't this intro remind one of the UK's The Office theme?

Perfeck.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm afraid the only Jack London I've read is "To Build A Fire", and there are no glad rags in that!

This is definitely the UK Office theme song. Brilliant!

Hold on people.
You don't want to go around using the word gladrag.
Believe me.
A gladrag is what hippy recycling chicks call a wad of scrap cloth they use instead of store bought maxi pads.
I know I know.
I had to tell you otherwise you'd be acting like a fool in some public place shouting out about your fly gladrags or something.
LOL!!
Peace.
