Perhaps this song inspired a mania for churchbells which reached its apotheosis in this.

Thanks, Clark! Yeah, I don't even "associate" that vocal style with a particular band, I just think of it as "standard alienated post-punk/new wave male vocal style". And I tend to avoid it, actually, but I'm cool with it on this one. Thx for the comment! P.S. It'd be cool to trace the origins of that vocal style... who was the first to use it?
