The Bee Gees - Sweet Song of Summer
I'm finding that this one has more psychic resonance in the evil darkness of January than it did when I first heard it last June. In troth, it is a winter song.
Featuring Mike Vickers.

Big Star -
Untitled Instrumental
Thirteen (alternate mix)
Available on this bootleg. Thanks to Clunk for the tip, and to Mike for the synchronicity!
Click here to read SPC's original post of "Thirteen", with some vintage commentary from ib.
The question remains: what did they say about Paint It, Black?

Can't resist ruling another one from this, the most inspirational release of 2008.

Alex Chilton -
My Rival
I've Had It
This site has seen a couple of Big Star posts, and a handful of Alex Chilton references (all courtesy of our guest poster extraordinaire, ib, before he launched the phenomenal SibLINGSHOT), but I don't think we've covered any Chilton solo work. Amends will be made this week.

Bill Summers and Summers Heat - Walking on Sunshine
Featuring Tony Lewis on drums, Bill Summers on percussion, and Scott Roberts on rototoms. Percussion arrangement by Bill Summers. Special thanks to the great My Jazz World for a vinyl rip that sparkles as brightly as Bill's medallion.

Brian Bennett - Holy Mackerel!
If you watched a lot of rugby on English television thirty years ago (which, for any number of reasons, I did not), you might recognize this. Note the sound in the right channel which channels the J. Lennon staccato rhythm guitar stylings of Happiness is a Warm Gun and Oh! Darling.

Daevid Allen & Euterpe -
Children of the New World
Wise Man in Your Heart
I finally got around to listening to side one of this album and encountered the lovely "Children of the New World", in which Daevid expands upon the theme of Eternal Recurrence.
"Wise Man in Your Heart" is from the archives {original air date 2/6/07}, and features Mike Howlett on bass and Pierre Moerlin on percussion.
I climbed through many lives to find the secret golden flower
But when I woke I found I slept for less than half an hour

The Power Station - Some Like It Hot
One of the quintessential Tedward jams. This one got my in-laws dancing at a recent family Christmas gathering, and moved them to declare it their "favorite song" (true story). Produced by Bernard Edwards. Surprising key change from the intro to the verse at 0:32.
Some like it hot but you can't tell how hot till you try.

Don Agrati - Hollywood Song
This is from Don's 1973 Elektra LP Homegrown, "recorded at home with Keith Olsen's homemade 8-track." A bit of "Mean Mr. Mustard" meets Countdown to Ecstasy-era Steely Dan, with a less competent rhythm section. Don played all the instruments himself. On a side note, Curt Boettcher apparently had some involvement.

Shirley Bassey - Moonraker
I listened to this about a hundred times before I realized that the triangle in the backing track is meant to evoke the weightlessness of spaceflight.
Music by John Barry. Lyrics by the incomparable Hal David.
I've seen your smile
In a thousand dreams
Felt your touch
And it always seems
You love me
Aretha: Day Dreaming
Some soul to melt any winter blues...

Major Swellings - Spit and Dip
Taking the Way-Back Machine to 2005 tonight for this rowdy jam from Major Swellings. It's a re-edit, of course. If anyone happens to know what the source material is, please do get in touch. Also, a question for vintage synth fans: is that an ARP?

Hey gang, just a reminder that we still do an hour-long show for Viva Radio every week (more or less). This week's webisode drops today at 2 PM EST, and features an assortment of classic jams from the past 2+ years of this blog, plus a handful of "new" ones to be featured here in weeks to come. Archived shows can always be accessed here. And if you enjoy the music, why not take a page from Brenton Wood's book and give us some kind of sign?
Thanks for listening.
Todd Rundgren - Everybody's Going to Heaven
Thanks to Jude for the tip on this one. Note: I'm cutting it off before King Kong Reggae, because I'm not as into that.
Featuring Moogy Klingman on organ.

Ruth - Mots
Mike introduced me to Ruth with this post. Now, two years and one day later, she or they make her or their triumphant return to these pages.

Flayer - Wanna Get Back Your Love
Happy New Year, first of all. Isn't it good to be back in an odd-numbered year? Here's another one from this (well worth the purchase). Hope you like it. Thanks for listening!
