The Supremes - Love Is Here And Now You're Gone

So many "lost love" songs in the Supremes/H-D-H canon: Reflections, this one, Stop in the Name of Love, Where Did Our Love Go, etc. Are torch songs an endangered species in pop music these days?

The bass sound gets intriguing around the 0:36 mark, like there's chorus on it. I'm pretty sure this is because there's a Fender bass and an upright bass playing in more-or-less unison throughout.

Perhaps it was the harpsichord bit at 0:42 that earned Lamont Dozier the hard-earned sobriquet, "Black Bach"?

P.S. This is soooo much better than modern pop music!!!

The Supremes - Reflections

The psychic bow drawn at 0:40 is released at 0:50, like a corkscrew to your heart.

Holland-Dozier-Holland et al. cavorting quite near the tippy-top of Mount Parnassus on this one.

The London Jazz Four -
Rain
Yes It Is

I'm posting some songs from the already-posted "podcasts."

"Ra-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ain, I don't mind." It took me a minute to hear that in the bridge on this.

Syl Johnson - Different Strokes

"In Russia, the Moscow Forum. I packed it three nights in a row. It was so crazy, the people went wild over the music. And the women out there were tall and slender -- tough but good looking. It's beautiful women in Brazil too, but America has the finest ladies. I remember I had sex with two different women out of my country -- there was one in Japan and one in England, that's it. But I don't care about the women -- fuck that! I go for the money!"

-- Syl Johnson, in the Village Voice, in response to a question about the craziest place he had played.

Things are finally starting to get languid around here.

The Rockin' Berries - She's Not Like Any Girl

I'm liking the falsetto leaps in the melody on this one. Very rainy, very British, very Sunday.

The Cake - Baby That's Me

Written by Jack Nitzsche and Jackie DeShannon. And yes, it's just a hair's breadth away from Be My Baby. Is that going to be a problem?

The Mamas & the Papas - Creeque Alley

If you have some time to while away, by all means go here. I was most interested to discover a tenuous link between the Mamas & the Papas and Duffy's Love Shack!

The Rolling Stones: 2000 Man

"Anderson has a fine sense of how music works against an image....I love the scene in Bottle Rocket when Owen Wilson's character, Dignan, says, 'They'll never catch me, man, 'cause I'm fuckin' innocent.' Then he runs off to save one of his partners in crime and gets captured by the police, over '2000 Man' by the Rolling Stones. He - and the music - are proclaiming who he really is: he's not innocent in the eyes of the law, but he's truly an innocent. For me, it's a transcendent moment. And transcendent moments are in short supply these days."

--Martin Scorcese on Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket
