Shiny Two Shiny - Waiting For Us (12" mix)

This was just reissued on Captured Tracks (thanks!), so I took the link down. Let's notice that the 12" mix places the snare drum on "1" and "3", with bass drums on "2" and "4", while the album version does not. In other words, the drumbeat is backwards. Off the top of my head, I can think of only one other song that does this, and there it happens only for a few bars (at the 2:12 mark).

Who can name some other songs that do this?

EVENT INVITE!
Dear party people, please join me on Thursday, November 6th, at the Walter Reade Theater (Lincoln Center), for a special screening of ANGST (1983), a disturbing German Austrian horror film!

Event details here.

I'll be DJing the afterparty. The subject matter isn't quite as lighthearted as last time, so I'm not sure what to play. I'm thinking possibly 80s, possibly Klaus Schulze-related, possibly German, possibly scary/funny. Probably this one will make an appearance. Anyone got any other ideas?

Should be a great mix of people at the event considering what sort of person would seek this film out. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Danielsson & Pekkanini - Otroligt Blåst Och Dum

A question for our Scandinavian friends: Is the bit at 1:56 an old Swedish drinking song (I hope)?

Affairs Of The Heart - Waterloo Sunset

So apparently I've entered my Hi-NRG phase. We all knew this day would come eventually.

The way the vocalist (some say it's one of the girls from Strawberry Switchblade?!) sings "Friday night" at 2:56 is making me think there could be/should be/is an equally great Italodance cover of Captain Jack out there, somewhere.

Apologies to Sheridan for stepping on his post. It's 17 degrees outside and I feel like I'm losing my mind.

Victrola - Maritime Tatami

Memorably described by one youtube commenter as "cruel and beautiful." Highlights include the vocal inflection at 3:43 and the change at 4:41 lasting for two bars instead of four. In sum, a pretty heavy record.

Marie Moor - Illusions

Since no one has offered to send me their copy of this record yet, I'm posting a sweet youtube rip of it for now. (Thanks to the folks at clipconverter.cc for the good times.) Words and music by Friedrich Hollaender. Here's a clip of Marlene Dietrich singing the O.G.

In this crazy paradise, you are in love with pain.

Pop the champagne.

Does anyone have a copy of this record they want to give me?

Marvin Gaye: Star-Spangled Banner

Marvin singing the national anthem at the 1983 NBA all-star game.

This one goes out to NBA legend Earl Monroe on his 67th birthday. And here's Woody Allen on "the Pearl" in 1977:

It’s amazing, because the audience’s “high” originates inside Monroe and seems to emerge over his exterior. He creates a sense of danger in the arena and yet has enough wit in his style to bring off funny ideas when he wants to. He has, as an athlete-performer, what few actors possess. Marlon Brando is one such actor. The audience never knows what will happen next and the potential for a sudden great thrill is always present. If we think of an actor like George C. Scott, for instance, we feel he is consistently first rate, but he cannot move a crowd the way Brando does. There is something indescribable in Brando that pins an audience on the edge of its seats at all times. Perhaps because we sense a possible peak experience at any given moment, and when it occurs, the performance transcends mere acting and soars into the sublime. On a basketball court, Monroe does this to spectators.

Agnetha Fältskog - Wrap Your Arms Around Me

Music to lose your virginity to from Sweden's Agnetha Fältskog, best known as the first "A" in ABBA, featuring a bold 'n' brassy guitar riff and an embarrassingly forthright chorus. Many thanks to Michele Cesana of the great Sci-Fi Pogo blog for the tip in this sparkling mix.
