Earle Mankey - Mau Mau

At post #1776, we come to Earle Mankey. You'd be forgiven for assuming this was a cover of this. (It's not, yet somehow I'm getting back-to-school vibes from this one too.)

Just the slightest dab of melancholy in the chord changes at 0:23 and ff. is all this writer needs for a good time.

#1 in the UK charts, nowhere on the US charts.

I wish I could go back in time and persuade David Gilmour to play the guitar solo.

Japan - Adolescent Sex (album version)

Apparently they re-recorded this for the 45, but I prefer this version, in part because the entrance of the synth line is delayed until about one minute in, and comes as a surprise.

Speaking of, I'm obsessed with the eerily charismatic boredom of keyboard player Richard Barbieri in this video (see 0:57 and following). It's like it's too unspeakably tedious for him to even play those four chords.

X-Ray Spex - Warrior In Woolworths

Who could be so churlish as to chafe at classic rock moves in one's punk--especially when one hears shades of this, or the harmony in thirds and tubular guitar sound of this?

Amon Duul II - Another Morning

Thanks to JG for pointing me back to this one. It's all about the choral vocal part that kicks in at 1:37. Sounds like Ariel Pink or something? (or Mike + The Mechanics, "The Living Years"?)

Amon Duul II - Kirk Morgan

Thanks to Sorcerer for this one. The song structure is something like ABABCDCE and parts A,B,C,D, & E are all great. The rhythm guitar player in the right channel is a genius, as is pretty much everyone else involved in this, evidently.

Lyrics and album cover impenetrable.

...only country where the clouds are interesting

"Too much time to think, too little to do" has become all too meaningful to me lately.
