Michel Pagliaro -
Lovin' You Ain't Easy
Some Sing, Some Dance

Recorded at Apple Studios, London.

Love the labyrinthine bridge on Lovin' You Ain't Easy (the bit at 1:02 and following). Takes a few listens to be able to sing along with it. Is it even a bridge?

Pastor T.L. Barrett & The Youth For Christ Choir:
Ever Since
Nobody Knows

Now that my son is in full-day pre-K I had a minute to work on alphabetizing my CDs and actually listened to this full CD that I got four years ago. Dear me. Phil Upchurch on bass (didn't even realize he played bass?), the return of the twin-tambourine shamanistic attack, and arguably the greatest handclap sound ever committed to tape. Soultransfigured and soultransfiguring stuff here from Pastor Barrett and his flock.

Still available from Light In The Attic!

Léonie - En Alabama

Apparently this is how crazy things can get when J.C. Vannier writes a tune instead of just arranging one. Featuring (maybe?) the scintillating return of that sound we're thinking is strummed piano strings, as heard previously in this.

It just occurred to me that the bassline on the intro is a descendant of this.

Get ready for a refreshing flood of only the best neurotransmitters at the 0:35 mark.

Mungo Jerry - Memoirs of a Stockbroker

Hearing this ditty penned by a then twenty-five-year-old Ray Dorset, I was reminded of these thoughts from Richard Ellman on James Joyce's The Dead:

"That Joyce at the age of twenty-five and -six should have written this story ought not to seem odd. Young writers reach their greatest eloquence in dwelling upon the horrors of middle age and what follows it."

H. Tical - Distillation

This is what happens when an Italian library composer tries his hand at some Sabbath/Zep stylings. Dig the particularly mullet-haired change at 3:00. Props to the bass player, the two guitar sounds, and the ending as well.

Elton John - Amoreena

OK, this is the third time I've posted this song, but it's that good. And we haven't heard this version from 11/17/70.

Note to self - live more like a lusty flower in '12.

Hot Chocolate - You Could've Been A Lady (scratchandsniff re-rub)

A cursory glance through today's papers has led me to an inescapable conclusion: it's time to party.

Check the scratchandsniff soundcloud for more great edits and mixes.

Rattles - You Can't Have Sunshine Everyday

Thanks to Ted for peeling this one off in his now-legendary Turtle Dov mix. This song is a forerunner of Beck's Loser, and a descendant of the Hey Jude outro and (more remotely) Thus Spake Zarathustra*. On a side note, I'm liking these folks' sartorial decisions.

*I am becoming increasingly convinced of a crackpot theory of my own devising, namely that the Hey Jude outro (Na, na, na, na-na-na na, etc.) was subconsciously influenced by R. Strauss's Thus Spake Zarathustra. Note that 2001: A Space Odyssey was released on 4/4/68, and Hey Jude was recorded on 7/31/68.

Did Paul see 2001 before Hey Jude was written? IDK, but dig this:

"In the Magical Mystery Tour film, Flying was used to accompany landscape scenes of Iceland taken from an aeroplane. These sequences were unused outtakes from Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey."

Ramases - Balloon

If you're thinking, "Gee, that sounds like Lol Crème on lead guitar, moog synthesiser, and possibly background vocals," you are correct. Indeed, all four members of 10cc comprise the backing band here. (This was about a year before they recorded this.) The LP was reissued on vinyl somewhat recently by Mexican Summer.
