Oval - Photograph

I first heard this played by Ted some years back, and it's been making the rounds over at Viva Radio. Whatever the provenance, this is a version of a song that I didn't realize I liked (the song) which weirdly gets better (the version) every time you hear it.

On a related note, you'll be relieved to hear that I finally did secure a copy of this.

New Radiant Storm King - Phonecall

If you attended college in the northeast U.S. in the early-to-mid '90s, you either A) were in a band that sounded like this; B) were dormmates with someone in a band that sounded like this; or C) were yourself a member of New Radiant Storm King.

The opening guitar notes remind me of this one.

...and I'm still welcoming suggestions for this 1993 project.

Up Above The World - Trying To Reach You

Many thanks to Plague for recommending a David Holmes mix in which this appears. I believe the correct adjective for this track is "unhinged."

And I'm still seeking recommendations for an all-1993 playlist. Please post ideas in the comments either here or here.

The Other Two - Selfish

I'm working on an all-1993 mix and this is the flagship jam so far. Anyone got any ideas? All genres are fair game; obscurity is preferred. Thanks again for your assistance with the 1997, 1980, 2003, and 1990 projects. I also did a 1957 mix which you can stream as "Soda Fountains" on Viva Radio.

It will take a little while to get through all the years, eh?

Donald Byrd: The Cat Walk

From the album of the same name with the following line up:

Donald Byrd: trumpet
Pepper Adams: baritone sax
Duke Pearson: piano
Laymon Jackson: bass
Philly Joe Jones: drums

Of course there are those who have other associations with "The Cat Walk".

And then, before you know what hits you, I hit you with this. Donald Byrd in 1993, with Guru, on Jazzmatazz vol 1.

"Everybody knows that they have times when they just want to lay back, kick their feet up, you know, listen to some good music, and just lounge."

Philip Glass: Warszawa [1993]

If you were to play this to a friend and quiz that friend... Who composed it is obvious. What inspired it is less so. Then your friend would pound you. That's speculation, not personal experience.

I've been enjoying Glass's tributes lately. This particular composition tops them all.

The entire Low Symphony is available, through resellers, here.

A.D. presents: the Over The Edge soundtrack (highlights)

Cheap Trick: Hello There [1977]
Cheap Trick: Downed [1977]
Halen: You Really Got Me [1978]
Jimi: Come On (Part 1) [1968]
The Ramones: Teenage Lobotomy [1977]
Valerie Carter: Ooh Child [1977]

Did anyone see that movie Over The Edge [1979]? I remember seeing it on cable at my dad's house in the early 80's, and for whatever reason it made a lasting impression. Please enjoy these selections from the soundtrack, of which the highlight is, for me, Valerie Carter's wicked soft-rock take on "Ooh Child", which memorably closes the film as the kids ride off on a bus to reform school.

In researching this movie I have learned that it was a favorite of Kurt's; indeed one of his 3 favorite movies. When Kurt used to rock those goofy oversized sunglasses it was apparently a subtle tribute to the taciturn, sunglasses-wearing character of "Johnny" from O.T.E.

Furthermore, one can not overstate the influence of Cheap Trick on Nirvana. I remember Kurt citing them as an influence in an interview, and after re-listening to these Cheap Trick tracks I'm seeing the connection more and more, even down to Robin Zander's hair.

To read more about Over The Edge, look no further than ClaudeZachary.ote, clearly the premier O.T.E. website on the Internet. Which other site features painstakingly-rendered scale-models of New Granada in miniature?

Family Fodder: Film Music [1981]

Crikey. I finally got around to listening to some of these Family Fodder singles last night, and while I knew this band was good, I didn't expect to be blown away to this degree. I listened to this song about 7 times in a row. As of right now, this is my favorite song of all time and Family Fodder is the G-BOAT (Greatest Band...). This song is really reminding me of something, I can't figure out what. Maybe Gold Soundz (similar harmelodics, and both songs use the word "empty"), but I still don't think that's it.

Visit the Dark Beloved Cloud to order your copy of Water Shed, the first new Family Fodder album in 17 years! (Dark Beloved Cloud has a lot of cool older FF material available, too.)

We have to stop for lunch!
