Noël Akchoté - Carlo Gesualdo: "Moro, lasso, al moi duolo"

"So a twenty-first century guitarist recorded all of Gesualdo's madrigals after transcribing them for five guitars? Huh. I'm still listening. But were they recorded on, you know, a cassette recorder, yielding quite a bit of background noise? And were they also recorded in, you know, like a zoo or whatever, so you can hear some kind of bird or something chattering away in the background, and also many cars driving by? They were? OK, cool. I'm in."

N.B. If memory serves this is the first we've heard of Renaissance music performed on modern guitars since this one, but there's myriad more on offer at Noël's bandcamp page.

Crystal Fighters - Champion Sound (Psychemagik remix)

This has the sickest bagpipeësque riff in it since at least Big Country... or maybe ever?

Thanks idk for the .gif.

Igor Stravinsky - Otche Nash
Brenda Lee - The Crying Game
Zoo - Hard Times, Good Times
Tuesday - Sewing Machine
France Gall - Les Petits Ballons
Nancy Sinatra - Sugar Me
England's Glory - Bright Lights
Helen Banks - Do You Know
Sensational Nightingales - My Sisters And Brothers
Sadistic Mika Band - Hi Jack (I'm Just Dying)
El Tigre - Figure

Ilitch - Peripherikredcommando
Step Lang - Airborn
Radar - Una Splendida Emicrania
Miharu Koshi - Parallélisme
Electric Light Orchestra - Letter From Spain
Haruomi Hosono - Sports Men

I wanted to do a little compendium of some of my top finds of 2011, the songs that really made "life work leaving" (to quote a cryptic James Joyce). I also needed a reasonable excuse to post this picture of my boy.

Best wishes to everyone for a happy 2012...

Duran Duran - Save A Prayer (after disco rough edit)

Drip-Dry eyes - I Believe In You

Drip-Dry eyes is a Japanese musician and, not surprisingly, a huge Yukihiro Takahashi fan. Here's his myspace. As near as I can tell, this is a cover of an obscure Yukihiro b-side. I ripped the mp3 from a youtube. (Drip-Dry, please let me know if that's not cool...)

Bonus points for the detuned churchbell sound.

The Soft Rocks - Whore Your Love

Disco Power Play, The Album, now available from all the finest European record-sellers.

The drummer does something quite nifty at 1:24 (and again at 2:14, 4:35, and 5:26). Kudos.

And yeah, I've had no luck trying to find the source of this re-edit so far, although I did encounter an even slower Nils Lofgren reggae-halftime version.

The Stepkids - Shadows On Behalf

If this were a lost electro-psych-soul obscurity from '73, it would be one of the greatest crate-digs of all time. Instead, it's a genius single devised by three lads from Connecticut who style themselves The Stepkids. High-quality mp3 and vinyl available from Stones Throw records. Catch the 'Kids live at Fort Green Park in Brooklyn on July 12th.

Honk: Tunnel Of Love

from the soundtrack to Five Summer Stories

from the liner notes: "HONK lives in the hills of Laguna Beach...the entire group contributed to the composition of the score, which was specially written to the actual filmed sequences...the album and soundtrack was recorded in Hollywood at Criterion Music's studio."

I could see Phish covering this when they re-form in 2011.

Herb Alpert & Hugh Masekela: Happy Hanna [1978]

written by Hotep Cecil Barnard and Caiphus Semenya

from the album Herb Alpert/Hugh Masekela

This song is dedicated to my lady, who is sadly out of town at the moment. I grabbed this record yesterday at the smooth jazz treasure trove that is Broadway between 72nd and 73rd, and this track and its title instantly reminded me of her.

The guitar at the 1:39 mark is beautiful; too bad dude only got 4 bars.

I could see Phish covering this when they reunite in 2011.
